Intelligent Medical Devices

As reported on Apr 2, 2009, one of the world's best chip makers, Intel, formed an alliance with GE Healthcare. To me, computer chips and medical devices should to higher intelligence in health devices; each company focusing on its core expertise. The result will be innovative ways for industry leaders to deliver personalized care based on prevention.

The monetary value of the partnership is relatively low, but the significance is high.

From the web:

"The technologies are designed to help seniors live independently and patients with chronic conditions manage their care from their own homes, the companies said.

GE Healthcare will sell and market the Intel Health Guide, a care management tool designed for health care professionals who manage patients with chronic conditions. The companies also said they will combine "skill sets and extensive research resources to accelerate the innovation and commercialization of next-generation home health technologies."

  1. To me, it is interesting that Intel is going directly to a services company, bypassing the usual suspects in the 'software' layer (such as Microsoft or IBM etc.). Clearly, Intel does not want to be seen as being in the commodity-end of the chain. By creating a JV focused on new products, they are working to further extend the 'Intel Inside' logic of embedding Intel as a core module in the evolving healthcare system.

  2. GE Healthcare can leverage Intel's competence in ethnographic research to modify the products and services according to the culture and needs of different geographies. With growing China/India markets it would be important to find what technology means in the religious, cultural and social context to the Asians.

  3. I've been in groups of many critics. They were all good. But this is a special one it really stands in my mind ... like a shiny vampire (I mean that's really a good way)
