In addition, the Boston Globe has now been put under pressure by its parent company, Times Co., to either cut costs or being shut down. I'm still surprised that newspapers, some of which have the best websites around, haven't been able to figure out a new business model that accommodates this changing landscape.
The video mentions micro-payments...I think that is a real possibility for the big newspapers. I think a lot of people would be willing to pay a few cents to read an article from, say, the New York Times, and that the aggregate revenue could cover a significant portion of the gap between on-line ad growth and the drop in print-ad revenue.
I think the micro-payments are an interesting idea, but I'm not sure if people would pay (even a few cents) for information they could access easily from other sources.
A woman made an interesting point about how people are less careful about verifying the quality of the information because reporters are pressured to get news out quickly.
