Is our information safe?

I was surprised to see on cnn.com this morning and article that said, "hackers stole data on Pentagon's newest fighter jet". The article went on to say that, "thousands of confidential files on the U.S. military's most technologically advanced fighter aircraft have been compromised by unknown computer hackers over the past two years". Although no classified information was accessed, it is scary to think that the US government's "most technologically advanced fighter aircraft" is not impervious to attacks.

  1. Military assets are constructed and designed over a complex network of suppliers and internal agencies that all have different spheres of information security control. There are standards like NIST that roughly provide standardized auditing and such, but compliance is spotty and investigations are usually quite sloppy. It is very unfortunate that much of these trends that we have studied in this class have advanced without thought being given to control and security.

  2. I thought that article was interesting, but the truth is it shouldn't surprise you that much - when a good hacker wants in, they'll flat out get in by one means or another. Much of our top security is aimed at preventing the things we know about. Good hackers are finding new ways in all the time...

  3. I agree with Nick. We need to pay attention to security and privacy as an overarching theme before we can much progress....
