This is something we talked about last year in IS717. Free Skype for the iPhone is now available. A blackberry version is expected in May.

Hmmm I wonder how are people at AT&T feeling about this. Already they are not making profits through this apple-at&t deal and now to make things worse, one can make free calls from iPhone using Skype.
ReplyDeleteAlso I wonder, if I can have Skype application on my iTouch and tomorrow we have free wi-fi everywhere what is the need for i"Phone"? :)
That is the big threat. I am hearing rumors that China Mobile wants Apple to create a version with wi-fi disabled for the china market--perhaps for the same reason!
ReplyDeleteWell, if you think about it, I pay for my basic minutes anyway. Why pay skype to make a phone call to non-skype users?
ReplyDeleteI don't think the threat is to phone. The question is that if wi-fi is so ubiquitous, then why are users still paying $20-$40/month for a data connection on their phones?
I installed it as soon as it was available on the app store. One of my brothers lives in Bratislava, so we usually talk over Skype. I hear it's a little choppy over 3G, but I'm looking forward to being able to talk with him using my phone. Now all they have to do is include push notification for incoming calls when iPhone 3.0 launches this summer.
ReplyDeleteThe real disruption would come with a wide-scale roll out of WIMAX networks. Wi-fi networks are short range, but if you've got WIMAX - which can blanket a 30 mile radius - covering entire cities, then everyone can use Skype to talk to everyone else - for free.
